Played at Kevin's place. KP - pascal and Kevin go face to face at two-player games. Stephan is incapacitated, Alain is drowning in exams, Mike is overwhelmed, Ian saves G2E! We play a game of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza for shits and giggles, but abandon it after we realized it’s REALLY aimed at kids.

Well, in many ways actually;
$300 bucks you pay now, will be much less buying power in 5 years, so
it will be 'less value' for them to return.
They will invest that $300 now into stocks or something and in 5 years
there will get profit on it.
They basically secured another sale of something to you in the future which
is more business for the store, so also profit.
I usually never buy insurance unless I have to, but a year ago I did buy
one for the headphones i bought in walmart, just because they promised no
hustle return option if i buy that. Actually when I wanted to return those
a few months later, Walmart had policies changed due to Covid, and
headphones were not accepted for return for hygienic reasons anymore.
Lesson of the story - never buy insurance!

These are all possibilities indeed. Interest rates, inflation, small print return conditions, in-store credit that involves bigger purchases, and the fact that many (most?) people will forget about their credit 5 years later!

I think its just like gift cards. Most people won’t even claim it that many years down the road.

A fun puzzle (based on a true story)
I just bought a new fridge at Leon's.
They offered me a 5-year extended warranty for 300$ with -- and this is pure genius -- the promise that if the warranty was not used after 5 years, I would receive a store credit of the same amount. So the customer NEVER loses. Any repair would likely cost more than 300$, and if everything goes fine, I get my value back anyways.
I politely declined out of principle (I never pay for a risk I can afford myself) and because I know they still make money out of this.
But how? This is my question to you.
