Played at Stephan's place. SKM. Two bags of chips manage to be eaten, despite a low number of players and a preliminary chat about Alan's cat's wormy expectorations. And we play a new game.

Game played

Winners

Notes

Gold West Kevin Caron Kevin is the clear winner with 112 points, 14 more than Mike in second place. A post-mortem analysis of Kevin's win leads to the conclusion that the key to victory in this game is to keep getting wood and touching yourself.

It's been a while but I've seen it before. ''Daddy! Cliff vomited spaghetti! Euuuwe why is the spaghetti moving?''

As usual after we play a game for the first time, I reread the rules this morning to see if we did anything wrong. Turns out we did only one faux pas: the bonus tiles we picked up after placing a token in boomtown (the 3 x 3 grid) were in fact meant for investments; they should have been picked up after buying one of the investment cards. This does not take away from Kevin's win; in fact, he would have won by even a bigger margin, as he bought more investment cards than the rest of us, and was less involved in boomtown.

Another cool thing I learned today is about bats; apparently, they can not
lift off like birds by themselves, so that is why they have to hang upside
down, and just drop when they want to start flying. Also, most of them can
not even walk, except Vampire bats, and when they do, that looks quite
weird:

So a bat on the ground is doomed. Wow.

Well, as always in biology, things are not that black and white. Most bats are capable of taking flight from the ground, but it is much more difficult than by dropping in the air, so they prefer to land on elevated positions (or climb to elevated positions if they happen to be on the ground for whatever reason). But then, why not just perch on branches, like birds do, rather than hang? Part of the reason is that their wings need to be very long, relative to their body length, to compensate for their lack of feathers giving an airfoil shape, and such long wings make perching on branches difficult. Also, tendons in their hindlegs have evolved to automatically close the toes in a hanging position, so that no muscular energy needs to be spent in such a position.
Fun fact: in 1995, Canada Post issued a 45-cent stamp featuring a hoary bat. These bats weigh only 30 g, and back then a 45-cent was enough to send a 30-g package anywhere in Canada. But a small bat like that could fairly easily take off from the ground and fly to its destination, with no help from Canada Post.
